A magnificent late 18th-century George III period six-door breakfront library bookcase, crafted from the finest figured mahogany. It features a moulded cornice above six astragal glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves. The lower breakfront middle section includes a well-figured fitted secretaire drawer with compartments under a sliding tooled leather inset writing surface, revealing secret compartments. Below, six beautiful figured mahogany panelled doors open to adjustable shelves, all resting on a moulded plinth base. The central drawer bears the stamp “Gillows of Lancaster,” as visible in the photo. The piece boasts outstanding color and patination, and its size, style, and exceptional quality of timber suggest it was likely created as a special commission.
The Gillow family, renowned for their contributions to British cabinet making during the 18th and 19th centuries, established a reputation for producing high-quality furniture from the best woods in elegant yet practical styles, often incorporating ingenious devices.
